Recovery Walks! 2006
|
During National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, PRO-ACT will host Southeastern Pennsylvanias 5th Annual RECOVERY WALKS! on Sunday, September 17th, 2006 along Kelly Drive in Philadelphia's beautiful Fairmount Park. This is the largest walk for recovery in PA; last year over 1,500 participated!
Recovery Walks! offers hope to those still struggling in this disease and for their family members. This event presents a formidable challenge to stigma, the biggest factor involved in preventing people from seeking help. By putting a face on recovery, Recovery Walks! shows that recovery is real. Monies raised over event expenses will support PRO-ACT's existing programs, essential trainings for volunteers from the recovery community, and expansion of recovery support services throughout the 5-county region of Southeastern Pennsylvania.Click here to learn about The Honor Guard!
Join us for Recovery Walks! Together we'll form a visibly large group of clean and sober people and others who support recovery. Be a part of this vital effort to create and show positive images about addiction recovery to the larger social community.
Participants will gather by Boathouse Row's Lloyd Hall for a fantastic afternoon that includes a 3-mile walk, refreshments, musical entertainment and motivational speakers. Registration begins at 1pm; the walk kicks-off at 2pm.

Over 1,500 Show Their Support for Addiction Recovery
More than 1,500 people took part in Recovery Walks! on Sunday, September 18, 2005. This is the largest gathering, in the Philadelphia area, of individuals showing public support for recovering addicts, alcoholics and their family members. They walked three miles to show their support for and belief in recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions and to fight the stigma of addiction, which keeps people from seeking help. The walk route along Kelly Drive in Philadelphias Fairmount Park began and ended by Boathouse Rows Lloyd Hall.
The walk is one of many celebrations happening across the nation during September, National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Recovery Month celebrates the successes of people in recovery and acknowledges men and women in the treatment field who dedicate their lives to helping people with alcohol and drug use disorders.
At Recovery Walks! several prominent speakers added their voices for recovery to the cause, including Philadelphia Councilwoman At-Large Blondell Reynolds-Brown, Dr. Arthur C. Evans (Director of Philadelphias Office of Behavioral Health/Mental Retardation Services) and C. Thomas Brown (Coordinator for On-sight Trainings Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Department of Health, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania). Derrick Ford (Community Liaison for Philadelphias Behavioral Health Special Initiative Program) kicked-off the walk around 2:30pm. Joining Dr. Evans and Mr. Ford were several Gulf Coast evacuees, whom the city is hosting at the Wanamaker School, and who are recovering not only from Hurricane Katrina, but also from drug and alcohol addictions.
Violinist Carlos Santiago provided musical entertainment during registration. The harmonious vocals of the Chestnut Brothers entertained participants at the walks conclusion.
More than 50 PRO-ACT volunteers staffed the event and over 20 teams walked for recovery. Pre-registered teams included: ACTS Christian Traditional Services, Belmont Behavioral Health, Community Council Coping Plus, Community Council - "TCM", Discovery House Champions from COMHAR (Community Organization Mental Health and Retardation), Fairmount Behavioral Health Serenity Works Team, Gaudenzia, Greater Philadelphia Health Action Al-Assist Behavioral Health, Horizon House, Kensington Hospital, Lost Coin Recovery Housing Program, North Philadelphia Health System, Parkside Recovery, PICL (Pennsylvania Institute for Community Living), Recovery Kings, Serenity - Main Line AA Clubhouse, Team BHSI, Team Progress (Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health/Mental Retardation Services). Many thanks to all our teams and every individual who walked for recovery!
