JUVENILE ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM

This is a program of education/intervention for the young person who has been identified as an alcohol or drug user. Participants range in age from 12 to 21 years.

The central goal of the JUVENILE ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM is to identify and change harmful behaviors before they lead to more serious problems. This program can help participants make informed decisions, but ultimately, they alone possess the power to choose.

WHY SHOULD A YOUNG PERSON ATTEND THIS PROGRAM?

1. To receive the most up-to-date information about substance use and     abuse and its negative effects.
2. To receive the opportunity to explore your value systems in relation to     alcohol and other drugs and to encourage positive change.
3. To receive the opportunity to share experiences, develop new coping and     decision-making skills and improve self-image.
4. To encourage continued growth in your life and receive referrals for     further help if you have a more serious problem.
A screening tool is utilized to identify those with more serious problems. To ensure that participants receive the maximum benefit from the program, participant's needs are evaluated and recommendations to assist with further change are given.

THE JUVENILE ALCOHOL & OTHER DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAM is a 12-hour program which covers the following topics

Program Orientation- What do you know about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, what do you need to learn and why are you here?

Laws and Consequences - Pennsylvania laws relating to alcohol and/or other drugs and looking at consequences that result from behavior.

Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs - factual information on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs to assist with personal risk assessment as a result of use of these substances.

The Family - Participants receive information about how alcohol and other drug use can affect the family. We'll also provide participants with resources for help if they are affected by someone else's use of substances.

Non-Use, Problem Use, Abuse and Addiction - Learn about the stages, symptoms of each and start to identify alternatives to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs use. Explore the differences between non-use, substance use, abuse and addiction, evaluate your relationship with alcohol and other drugs and identify practical alternatives to alcohol and other drug use.

Looking Ahead - Take what's been learned in class and make a plan for positive change - Now that you've been given information and the tools to help make a different decision, what choices will you make for yourself about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs?

There is a program fee of $125 that covers all sessions of the course and is payable no later than 7 days prior to the class series to maintain a previously reserved slot.
