Alcohol screening: learn how your drinking is impacting you

Are you a “low-risk” or an “at-risk” drinker? Everyone should know the risks that drinking poses to their individual health. The good news is that it’s easy to find out: get screened.

April 9, 2009 is National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD). We will be hosting screening and information events throughout Southeast Pennsylvania. Visit our NASD page for a full list of locations. Can't make it? That’s not a problem. Take advantage of our free and confidential online screening, available 24/7.

In addition to a screening, ask your healthcare provider if you have any conditions or take medications that might be affected by alcohol use.

Make a change

Once you’ve assessed the impact of drinking on your health, use the following tips to make a positive change.

Identify good reasons to cut down:
Find reasons that are important and meaningful to you. Keep those in mind as you create your plan.
Explore how making a change might impact your life for the better:
What might happen if you continue to drink at risky levels? How will things be different if you cut back or stop?
Identify situations where you might drink too much and plan for them:
Do you drink when you are bored? What else could you do? Come up with alternatives for yourself.
Find a buddy:
Enlist the help of someone who will support you in achieving your goals.
